Salmon oil vs cod liver oil - Does your dog need both, neither or just one?

Lachsöl vs. Dorschlebertran – Braucht dein Hund Beides, Keins oder nur Eins?

Finding the right supplement for a BARF diet can be a challenge. Especially when it comes to essential fatty acids and vitamins, many are faced with the question: salmon oil or cod liver oil? Both have their place, but they serve different purposes. In this blog, you can find out why your dog or cat can benefit from both and what you should look out for when making your choice.

Salmon oil - the power source of omega-3

Salmon oil is a real miracle cure when it comes to the supply of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). These essential fatty acids play a crucial role in your pet's skin, coat, joints, immune system and general vitality.

Healthy skin & shiny coat: Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect and prevent skin irritation and itching.
Joint support: Salmon oil is a valuable supplement, especially for older animals or four-legged friends with osteoarthritis.
Immune system booster: EPA and DHA strengthen the immune system and can regulate inflammatory processes in the body.
Cardiovascular health: Omega-3 fatty acids support healthy blood circulation and have a positive effect on the heart.

What should you look for?

  • High omega-3 content: A high-quality salmon oil should contain at least 30% omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Sustainable origin: Look for wild-caught or organic farmed salmon with certifications such as MSC or Friends of the Sea.
  • Purity: Pollutant-free oil is essential – it should be tested for heavy metals and other contaminants.
  • Light-protected packaging: Oxidation destroys valuable fatty acids. Therefore, buy salmon oil in dark bottles and store it in a cool place.

Cod liver oil – The vitamin D bomb
Cod liver oil is often less well-known than salmon oil, but it has one unbeatable advantage: vitamin D! This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for dogs and cats, as they can hardly synthesize it through their skin – unlike humans. Without vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium properly, which can lead to weak bones or other health problems in the long term.

Calcium absorption & bone health: Vitamin D ensures that calcium from food can be absorbed, thus strengthening bones, teeth, and muscles.
Immune system & cell health: A stable vitamin D level protects against infections and supports cell regeneration.
Heart & circulation: Vitamin D plays a role in regulating blood pressure and heart health.
Natural source of vitamin A: In addition to vitamin D, cod liver oil also contains vitamin A, which is essential for the eyes, skin, and immune system.

But be careful! Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can be overdosed. Therefore, precise dosing is crucial – especially with cod liver oil, which contains vitamin A in addition to vitamin D. While omega-3 fatty acids can easily be supplemented daily, cod liver oil should be dosed precisely.

How much vitamin D does your pet need?

  • Dogs need approximately 75–100 IU of vitamin D per kg of body weight per day.
  • Cats have a lower requirement but also benefit from an adjusted amount.

Feeding recommendation:
An ideal combination is to use primarily salmon oil and add a little cod liver oil 2-3 times a week.

1 ml of cod liver oil per 10 kg of body weight.
In winter, the amount can be doubled.

Salmon oil or cod liver oil – which is better?

Both! They serve different purposes. While salmon oil is a valuable source of omega-3 fatty acids, cod liver oil meets vitamin D requirements. The ideal solution is to use both oils in a targeted and complementary way:

For daily needs: Salmon oil for skin, coat, joints, and the immune system.

Specifically and as needed: Cod liver oil for vitamin D supply, especially in winter or when there is little sunlight.

Be careful of quality! Not all oils are created equal. Make sure your fish oil is high-quality, free of contaminants, and sustainably produced. Our salmon oil comes from Swiss salmon and has a high omega-3 content. Our cod liver oil is purified with exceptionally low levels of contaminants – ensuring the best possible nutrition for your four-legged friend.

Vitamin E – What's in it?

Vitamin E is added to salmon oil and cod liver oil to protect the sensitive omega-3 fatty acids from oxidation and extend the shelf life of the oils. For dogs, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals, strengthens the immune system, and contributes to healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Conclusion: Two oils – double the power for your pet!

While salmon oil provides daily omega-3, cod liver oil is the perfect supplement for vitamin D. If you want to provide your pet with optimal nutrients, you should include both oils in their diet – in the correct dosage, of course.
