BARF stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" and is based on feeding raw meat, organ meats, bones, vegetables, and fruit according to the prey principle.

BARF offers the advantage that the ingredients can be individually tailored. Furthermore, no artificial additives such as preservatives, colors, or flavorings are added. The natural vitamin content allows for optimal utilization of the nutrients.
In principle, all dogs and cats can be fed raw food. Depending on their health, activity level, age, and even in pregnant or lactating animals, the ration must be adjusted accordingly.
Compared to high-quality wet food, feeding raw meat is often more cost-effective. Because the nutrients in raw food are more efficiently utilized, dogs require less food than with dry food. This not only leads to improved well-being but can also reduce diet-related illnesses and thus reduce the need for veterinary visits.
When processing raw meat for pet food, the same hygiene standards apply as for food intended for human consumption, making the risk of salmonella infection comparable. Furthermore, carnivores such as dogs and cats can often eat carrion without developing health problems. Most germs are effectively killed by the animals' highly acidic stomach acid.
Instead of traditional waste, meat parts that are less in demand for human consumption but are still of high quality are recycled. These include, for example, tripe and omasum, offal such as liver, heart, or kidney, or cartilage and meaty bones.
