The Basis of Single-Component Feeding
When feeding with single components, you put together each meal yourself from various components. The basis for this is a percentage distribution based on natural prey animals – a model pioneered by Swanie Simon, among others.
This is the classic distribution:
80% animal content:
- 50% muscle meat
- 20% tripe or omasum
- 15% offal (of which 30% liver and 70% heart)
- 15% raw meaty bones (RBM)
Are you feeding tripe or omasum? No problem! In that case, you can simply count on 70% muscle meat – the rest remains the same.
20% plant-based content:
- 75% vegetables
- 25% fruit
It's best to feed vegetables and fruit separately – for example, vegetables four days a week and fruit three days a week. This allows your dog to better utilize the nutrients of each.
Sounds complicated? It doesn't have to be!
Don't want to mess around with calculators and percentages? We understand! That's exactly why we developed our practical BARF calculator. Simply enter your dog's body weight – and you'll get the right amount for each component. It couldn't be easier.
Why individual components?
Clearly: flexibility.
You can respond individually to your dog's needs – be it intolerances, allergies, specific illnesses, or as part of an exclusion diet. You decide what ends up in the bowl.
These supplements are part of it
It's simply not possible without supplements – whether feeding individual components or with our Balance Sausage. You'll also need:
- Salmon oil for omega-3 fatty acids
- Cod liver oil (2-3 times per week) for vitamin D
- Ascophyllum (seaweed meal) as a natural source of iodine
Egg yolk, boiled egg, sprouts, nuts, or a little more fat can also be added to the food – ideally twice a week.
You can also plan a fish day: Simply replace the muscle meat portion with pure salmon or Alaska pollock – or feed a whole fish.
The Balance Sausage – practical & balanced
Our Balance Sausage is based on precisely these principles. The animal component is already perfectly balanced – you only need to add vegetables, fruit, seaweed meal, and other ingredients as needed. Ideal for beginners, busy people, or travelers.
Conclusion: The choice is yours
Whether you prefer the control of the individual components or prefer the convenience of the Balance Sausage – both lead to a healthy, balanced, and species-appropriate diet.
Choose the path that suits you and your dog best!
