Properties and Effects of Propolis
Propolis possesses an impressive range of biological activities:
- Antibacterial: Effective against various strains of bacteria such as staphylococci and streptococci.
- Antiviral: Effective against viruses such as herpes and influenza viruses.
- Antifungal: Inhibits the growth of fungi.
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation and supports wound healing.
- Immunomodulatory: Strengthens the immune system by promoting the activity of white blood cells.
Use with Dogs
Propolis has a variety of uses in dogs:
- Wound healing: Propolis can support the healing of skin wounds. A tincture is recommended in this case.
- Ear infections (otitis externa): Topical applications of propolis tincture can be helpful in treating ear infections.
- Respiratory infections: Propolis can be helpful in treating upper respiratory tract infections.
- Skin problems: Propolis can be applied externally for minor wounds, bites, or fungal infections.
Use in Cats
Cats can also benefit from propolis, but caution is advised:
- Skin problems: Propolis can be applied externally for minor wounds, bites, or fungal infections. A tincture is recommended in this case.
- Sensitivity: Cats are more sensitive to certain substances. Therefore, before using it internally, a veterinary homeopath, nutritionist, or veterinarian should be consulted to rule out possible allergic reactions.
Recommended Use
Propolis can primarily be used internally in dogs – for example, to support the immune system, promote natural defenses, or during and after infections. It is particularly suitable for use as a course of treatment during the cold, wet season or during periods of increased stress.
The propolis powder – available in our shop, for example – can simply be mixed into the dog's food. It contains 80% pure propolis extract and is alcohol-free, making it particularly easy and well-tolerated to use.
Dogs should be used internally (as a course of treatment):
- Small dogs up to 5 kg: approximately ½ a pinch daily
- Dogs up to 10 kg: approximately 1 pinch daily
- Larger dogs: 1–1½ pinches, depending on weight
Duration of treatment:
4–6 weeks of feeding, followed by a 1–2 month break before feeding again if necessary. This allows the dog's body to function independently and prevents it from becoming accustomed to the preparation.
During the treatment, you should monitor your dog's reaction. In rare cases, propolis can cause an allergic reaction – a short tolerance test beforehand (e.g., applying a small amount to the oral mucosa) is recommended.
External use:
Propolis is also traditionally used externally for minor injuries, insect bites, or irritated skin. In this case, a tincture or ointment is usually used – however, we do not currently carry such products in our range.
Conclusion
Propolis offers a natural way to support the health of dogs and cats. When used properly and taking individual needs into account, it can make a valuable contribution to your pet's well-being.
